Abstract

Many Latinx youth experience poverty, violence, structural inequities, lack of access to social services, subpar learning conditions, lack of meaningful connections to their teachers, among other issues while they complete high school. Such conditions make it almost impossible for them to survive let alone succeed academically (Duncan-Andrade, 2009). The paper aims to better understand successful educational practices with Latinx youth and the role of family, community, institutional support, and teachers play in advancing the education of Latinx youth. The study is guided by two questions: what factors do the students identify as helping to succeed academically? what are the influences that Latinx student identify as motivating their successful graduation from an urban high school?
