Photovoice as a Pedagogical Tool for Learning in Social Work

Abstract

This paper aims to highlight the pedagogical implications of using arts-based research (ABR) in graduate social work education by using constructivist grounded theory approach. With the focus on transforming campus rape culture, an ‘Advanced Community Practice’ course was designed to implement a photovoice project. The graduate students recruited and trained undergraduate students to generate data through the form of photographs, narratives, and focus group interviews. At the end of the project, the graduate students were asked to write reflection papers which constitute the data for this paper. Our initial analysis of the data resulted in four themes that are; enhanced learning of content, understanding the role of social worker in macro-level practice, community engagement, and application of theory to practice.
