"Our Own History, Our Own Legacy": The Actualization of Change Agents Through Ethnic Studies Curricula

Abstract

This research project emphasizes how an ethnic studies course in San Diego Unified is moving towards the actualization of critically conscious and self-aware students who challenge dominant paradigms in the current sociopolitical context. The study demonstrates how critical race scholars use their research to document the experiences of students of color and forward racial justice in order to dismantle barriers of institutional access and socio-economic mobility. Through the analysis of student work samples and interview data, the researchers have documented narratives of underrepresented youth that have been historically marginalized. The goal of this study is to showcase an inclusive curriculum that speaks to the frustration of millions of people who continue to be denied their educational rights in this country.
