Challenging Detrimental Education Policies: The Role of Academics as Advocates

Abstract

As university academics tasked with both developing the next generation of teachers and principals and adding to the educational knowledge base, the struggle for truth and public education has increasingly become part of our own work. For the past five years, we have used empirical research findings to challenge education policies undermining public education and we are also purposefully preparing educators with the skills to advocate for research-based policies. This presentation offers findings from three research studies and posits our framework that may guide academics as they determine how and when to engage in advocacy.
