Fri, April 5, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Federal and state legislative mandates to increase preparation for and access to post-secondary education for foster youth have expanded the roles and responsibilities of school counselors. This study investigates the relationship and beneficial supports that former foster youth received from their high school counselors in their pursuit of higher education. Qualitative methodology in the form of semi-structured interviews was used to examine the role that school counselors played in helping foster youth create and pursue their educational goals. Three major themes emerged. The need for school counselors to provide: 1) A safe, caring and supportive relationship; 2) Access to resources to meet their unique needs and circumstances; and 3) Support with college selection, application and enrollment.
