The aim of this study was to find out how teachers’ general pedagogical knowledge is related to different motivational characteristics. An instrument was developed in order to measure teachers’ knowledge level, as well as capture their perceptions of self-efficacy, self-responsibility and intrinsic orientations. Data was collected from 167 pre-service teachers and 163 in-service teachers in Estonia. The results in both sample groups showed a positive correlation between self-responsibility for relationships with pupils and teachers’ knowledge. Pre-service teachers who felt more responsible for teaching quality, as well as in-service teachers who were more enthusiastic towards teaching, showed better general pedagogical knowledge. Surprisingly, no correlation between self-efficacy and knowledge was found.
