This paper introduced a system that supported student-centered online one-on-one tutoring and reported the effectiveness of the system by analyzing the data generated from 64 experienced mathematics teachers and 810 students in grade 7. It turned out that active users significantly outperformed the inactive users in their final exams (p=0.035) but with a small effect size (Cohen’s d=0.161). Further analysis showed that high prior-knowledge students tend to benefit more than low prior-knowledge students. A possible explanation from our current analysis is that high prior-knowledge students were more likely to make good quality of interactions with the teachers. Our analysis suggests that there is a room for technology to facilitate students make better interactions during online one-on-one tutoring.
