Abstract

In this paper, we consider how two teachers in Arizona and New York teach social studies that is culturally and linguistically responsive using bilingual practices while supporting active citizenship education for secondary newcomer Latino/a youth. Findings in this paper support strategies for recruitment, retention, and induction of teachers whose positionalities suggest a commitment to addressing the needs of diverse students by drawing on their experiences in culturally and linguistically diverse communities. This study offers examples of methods that showcase applying teachers’ knowledge of complex cultural, linguistic, social, economic, and political contexts, and how this informs their teaching of social studies, offering examples of bilingual practices that meet the needs of secondary newcomer youth.
