Relationships Between Achievement Emotions and Self-Regulated Learning in English and Mathematics Classes Among Streams

Abstract

Examining the relationships between achievement emotions and self-regulated learning (SRL) among streams is critical in helping educators improve learning and achievement. Research in achievement emotions and SRL is mainly conducted in the western contexts and has focused on individual and contextual differences. However, little empirical research has examined how positive emotions and self-regulated learning differ among different streams in the Asian contexts. This study investigated the relationship between achievement emotions and SRL among three streams. Participants were 216 Singapore secondary students, who were assessed using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire and Achievement Emotions Questionnaire. Results showed statistically significant differences in enjoyment and extrinsic goal orientation in English and math classes and peer learning in math class among the streams.
