The inclusion of all students in mainstream inclusive settings is still a challenge for most educational systems. The role that special schools should have in the progress towards greater levels of inclusion is object of debate. This paper presents preliminary results of a case study that analyses the implementation of a particular type of interactive learning environment –Interactive Groups (IG)– in a special school. IG have demonstrated to contribute to enhanced learning levels and group cohesion in mainstream schools for students with and without disabilities. This paper analyses in which ways, if any, IG can be transferred to special education settings and enhance the quality of education of children with disabilities that are educated in special schools.
