Gendered Citizenship: Educational Experiences of Girls and Boys as "Future" Citizens

Abstract

Gender is an important topic in citizenship education. National policies claim to promote gender equality to provide equal opportunities for male and female citizens. This paper aims to explore experiences of girls’ and boys’ inside schools through teachers’ views to analyze the “constructed citizenship” regarding gender in primary schools located in Southeast Turkey. A mixed method research design including 55 schools was utilized. Data were collected through open-ended item forms, and the analysis of the primary school curriculum. Document analysis of the curriculum and survey findings obtained from primary school teachers (N=204), psychological counselors (N=43) and school managers (N=55) reveal that gender inequality is directly or indirectly reproduced and paradoxically citizenship continues to be gendered throughout the schooling process.
