A Global-Local Paradox: The Influence of International Schools on Egyptian Students

Abstract

This study seeks to understand global-local connections in the field of elite, international schools in Egypt. The rising demand of international schools in Egypt, and worldwide, has created a phenomenon where localization is largely undertaken by foreign educators using foreign curriculums and foreign language instruction. However, very little is known about the influence this foreign-led process of localization has on host country nationals who attend these schools. Framed by cultural capital theory, this study investigates this phenomenon using a mixed methods approach. This study seeks to analyze the following: how do foreign-led processes of localization influence Egyptian students in Egypt’s elite, international schools? Sub-areas explored focus on social class reproduction, opportunities, and cultural disassociation.
