Abstract

We investigate the effects of race/ethnic matching on student outcomes. Our findings suggest that assignment to a racially/ ethnically matched teacher has positive impact on student outcomes for black and Latinx students. When black students are exposed to black teachers, they tend to receive fewer disciplinary actions and exhibit fewer days of unexcused absence. Similarly, when Latinx students are exposed to Latinx teachers, they tend to have fewer unexcused absences from school. For white students, however, assignment to white teachers does not influence student outcomes.
