Information and Communication Technology Agents of Change: Exploring the Teaching Practice of Academics at a University

Abstract

Universities have made significant investment in information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure to transform the way universities conduct their core business. This study utilizes Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation framework to explore how academics integrate ICT in their teaching practice at a university in Uganda. This research study adopted a qualitative research strategy and case study inquiry. Data collection included a mix of interviews, observations and document analysis. The findings indicate: first, that the use of existing ICT was mainly for the delivery of course material; second, academics believed that students exhibited increased enthusiasm to learn; third, and most significantly, academics abandoned the utilisation of the university’s LMS in favour of Web 2.0 social media technology to enhance their teaching practices.
