This study analyzes two lesson study groups to compare distinct cases of teacher agency in collaborative professional learning. Although each group follows an almost identical lesson study format within similar contexts, one group focuses primarily on exploring effective teaching strategies, while the other focuses primarily on deepening knowledge for teaching mathematics, resulting in differences between groups in what teachers feel they can accomplish (agency) via lesson study. Focusing analysis on each team’s discussion of research articles as an illustrative example of differences between teams, we find that teacher-facilitators play a key role in influencing teacher agency by framing tasks and guiding conversations during those tasks.
