Leveraging Research in a Contemporary University: A Model for Internationalization at Home

Abstract

Internationalization of higher education is well established as a process of integrating global dimensions of teaching, research and service initiatives within an institution. A gap exists in understanding how extra curricular initiatives can meet the needs of both local and international students for internationalization at home. This presentation reports on a case study conducted to explore how international service instructors of a co-curricular non-credit university initiative, the World Language and Culture Program (WLCP) embody dimensions of internationalization at home through individual and collective pedagogies of world languages and cultures. Implications suggest that the WLCP offers a model for the importance of internationalization spread throughout the faculty and students, as a collective initiative that can be projected as the standard.
