Cogitating Stuart Hall's Familiar Stranger as Autobiographical Method

Abstract

This proposed paper considers auto/biography within curriculum study as a method to better understand education as a social site of individual and collective production. More specifically, it mobilizes Stuart Hall’s recent memoir, Familiar Stranger: A life between two islands (2017) as a means for scholarly self-examination not only in relation to relevant more expansive theoretical frameworks, but to excavate the concept of historical conjunctures in which contending forces of political struggle are always contingent and contradictory. While Hall’s memoir offers valuable lessons from an examined life, it also sheds light on the challenges of biography in curriculum research in our present moment.
