The motivation for choosing teacher education is an important predictor for professional characteristics of teachers. Research within a person-centered approach indicates different motivation profiles in prospective teachers. The present study aims to validate these profiles and to investigate group differences in relevant professional characteristics (teacher interests, self-efficacy, attitudes towards inclusive education, self-regulated learning). A latent profile analyses with N = 312 German pre-service teachers based on their career-choice motivation resulted in four groups. We found differences in mostly all dependent variables with advantages for the more intrinsically motivated respectively the consistently high motivated group compared to the more extrinsically motivated profile. Implications for future research concerning the motivation to become a teacher and resulting consequences for higher education are discussed.
