Mapping the Discourses of Instructional Improvement: Where Is the Place of Supervision Anyway?

Sat, April 6, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

While the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) (2015) no longer requires that states evaluate teachers with student standardized test scores, states are staying the course with their use (Sawchuk, 2016), and are emphasizing improvement, the formative purpose of teacher evaluation. Since we in the field often say that instructional improvement is the purpose of supervision, this author surveys the discourse communities, the scholars that write about it, what they are saying, and locate supervision’s place amidst these discourses. Standing with supervision, there are about one dozen discourse communities concerned with improvement. With binoculars in hand, this author comes to know her neighbors and their communities wherein they live.
