Impacts of Gender and Citizenship Status on STEM Career Outcomes

Abstract

This study compared career outcomes of students working in STEM fields, analyzing data from the 2015 National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG) administered by the National Science Foundation. Researchers compared salary and satisfaction of students working in STEM careers by gender and citizenship status. Results suggest that naturalized citizens and permanent residents earn higher salaries than native citizens and those on temporary visas, while native citizens have greater satisfaction than all other citizen groups. The discussion considers implications for global workforce development, and US immigration policy in an era where national security outweighs the need for strategic recruitment of talent.
