Preparing STEM Teachers to Teach in High-Need Schools: Developing a Road Map

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 703

Abstract

Teacher education programs must prepare new science and mathematics teachers to teach diverse students (Gay, 2002), supporting high levels of learning through inquiry practices. This study is part of a larger project intended to design and study a teacher preparation progression that strongly integrates culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) into STEM teacher preparation. Data from novice teachers’ edTPAs were analyzed through theoretical frameworks of inquiry teaching and CRP. This allowed us to find aspects of the edTPA that can provide useful information about how PSTs may integrate the theories into their teaching and enable us to continually identify areas of improvement in our teacher preparation program. Preliminary results provided insights into areas of the TPP that need consensus among teacher educators.
