Competencies for Better Participatory Leadership in Engineering: A Delphi Study

Abstract

Engineering professionals recognize a growing need for increased leadership competence among college graduates entering industry; particularly in a post-truth world. However, the profession lacks a clear definition of leadership that aligns with outcomes of college curricula. To better define how the engineering industry conceptualized leadership skills, this study utilizes the Delphi method to gain consensus from industry executives regarding the necessary leadership competencies required for emerging engineers. 14 leadership competencies were identified: communication skills; ethics and responsibility; a people focus; critical thinking/problem solving; professionalism; “big picture” thinking; ambition and drive; humility; assertiveness; self-awareness; teamwork, collaboration and networking; business skills; time management; and management. The authors provide recommendations for intentionally promoting leadership development during the undergraduate engineering experience.
