School Discipline in Alabama: The Case of Cotton County Schools

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the use of exclusionary discipline practices in Cotton County Schools (pseudonym), Alabama. We focus on annual School Incident Reports provided to us by the Alabama State Department of Education for academic years 2010-2016. From 2010-2016, school officials in Cotton County routinely engaged in exclusionary consequences - the practice of excluding students from instruction and the business-as-usual social contexts of schooling - for disciplinary infractions that were subject to practitioner interpretation.
