While critical scholarship has made important calls to disrupt tracking practices, there has been relatively few studies that situate these efforts empirically, understanding what they do and how they do it. Using a case of an embedded honors program, that seeks to subversively detrack, this paper interrogates the organizational differentiation (Domina, McEachin, Hanselman, Agarwal, Hwang, & Lewis, 2016) of the program. This paper argues that the model for the embedded honors program has promising tenants to enable curricular opportunities, particularly if classroom culture and climate is addressed. Within a post-truth era, this paper points to the importance of layered efforts in challenging mechanisms of stratification in schools.
