Abstract

This paper describes the development and implementation of a literacy teacher leadership initiative in an urban school district. The initial project focused on improving the literacy outcomes for urban elementary school children many of whom are multiple language learners and living in under-resourced neighborhoods. This study is part of a larger grant-funded university/district collaboration designed to improve the literacy skills of early elementary students (K-2) through professional development model. The paper asks: How can the creation of teacher literacy leaders support improved literacy instruction and student learning in individual school and across the district? In what ways do assuming a teacher literacy leader role impact the professional development of the individual teachers?
