Toward an Embodied Democracy for Minoritized Youth Citizens

Abstract

This research provides an argument for an iteration of the American democratic idea that confronts injustice against minoritized persons by centralizing the minoritized experience in re-defining democracy. Framed using Dewey’s (1916) conception of democracy improved upon by Freire’s (1972) liberationism the findings of this qualitative study on minoritized youth civic actions suggest an embodied democracy can more fully accomplish justice inclusive of all persons, thus rendering the goods of democracy accessible to all persons. This paper illuminates that hip-hop praxis’ concern with justice must also interrogate how youth are taught and understand democracy.
