Abstract

Living in a plural society where groups are ethnically, nationally and religiously different and sometimes live in conflict necessitates the educational institutions to raise intercultural understanding and tolerance. Thus, teachers must be prepared to deal with conflict laden and to guide young generations forming a multicultural ideology.
For that reason, the main purpose of the study was to investigate perceptions of multiculturalism, as it pertains to teacher education, from the perspective of staff members in two colleges of education in Israel. The findings confirm the existence of awareness of multiculturalism in the two colleges. However, the “level of the intensity of multiculturalism” is not satisfying and the gap existing between preaching for multiculturalism and practicing it is still deep
