Citizenship Education in Latin America 2000–2018: A Systematic Review of Empirical Studies

Abstract

This paper is a systematic review of empirical studies, both in English and Spanish, of citizenship education in Latin America. It answers following two research questions: (1) What is the current state of research on citizenship education in Latin America and what are gaps in the research? (2) What are aspects this research asks those interested in citizenship education as a policy solution to consider? Results show that six categories emerge from the inductive process, mapping the areas of citizenship education research in Latin America: curriculum, what happens in the classroom, teachers’ views, students’ views, civic outcomes and civic identities. This paper also identifies areas for future research and provides insights for policy.
