In this research, we merge soccer, a passionate activity for many Latino middle school students, with science by using five practices developed by the Language-rich Inquiry Science with English Language Learners (LISELL) project to: (a) promote the importance of students’ thinking, reading and writing scientific ideas using English and Spanish, and (b) engage students in group thinking and problem solving. Inhabiting contexts like the classroom and soccer field helped us, the Latino students on the soccer team, and the soccer coach/science teacher to explore soccer, a collaborative activity, as a resource to promote group thinking and problem solving. We use assemblage theory to study how soccer can trigger science collaboration, group thinking, and problem solving in middle school settings.
