Poster #23 - A Departmentalized Model Employing Critical Pedagogies in Upper Elementary Classrooms: A Two-Year Design-Based Research Study

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Abstract
In today’s social climate, how do we teach students to think critically with the uncertainty about who or what to believe? Using critical pedagogies (e.g. Paris, 2014; San Pedro & Kinloch, 2017) this two-year design-based research study aims to build a model of instruction that strengthens critical thinking while building strong
student-teacher relationships. At the end of Year One, the majority of students reported a strong preference for the departmentalized model and suggested future improvements to be incorporated into the next iteration in Year Two when this cohort of 84 students move
to sixth grade working with three different teachers. Conjecture maps guide the embodiment, mediating processes and intended outcomes of this research and support systematic analysis of the intervention.
