Measuring Practicing Physician Readiness for Interprofessional Education and Collaboration

Abstract

There has been increasing interest in interprofessional education and collaboration within health professional schools over the last two decades. This is a developing field and there still exists a need for psychometrically sound assessment instruments and scales that tap into concepts surrounding interprofessional education and collaboration (IPEC). The primary objective of this study was to develop a scale to measure the attitudes and perceptions of attending physicians, fellows, and residents related to IPEC. A principal axis factoring with an orthogonal varimax rotation of 20 items produced a 5-factor solution explaining 60% of the variance. Examination of the items in each factor led to the following labels: “teamwork & communication”, “ethics & attitudes”, “roles & responsibilities”, “reflective practice”, and “patient-centered care”.
