Abstract

There has been little research into the use of online problem-based learning (PBL) in academic extra-curricular activities. Online PBL has targeted academic outcomes and at the same time is student-directed and teacher-facilitated, which may make it a good fit for an extra-curricular activity. This study examines students’ argumentative writing skill before and after an online PBL simulation. Results indicate that the online simulation was effective in promoting gains in argumentative writing. Possibilities for the use of online PBL in extra-curricular settings are explored.
