We examine how students used their bodies to develop an understanding of water particle behavior relating to states of matter. A Mixed Reality (MR) environment supported blending semiotic resources with embodied representations of particle motion. Students’ embodied experience shaped inscriptions that resurfaced when students ran into sensemaking trouble. We demonstrate the importance of a) providing students with a rich set of resources for sensemaking, b) the centrality of the body as one of those resources, c) the importance of supporting students in iteratively refining their understanding through use of those resources, and d) helping students transition from unique resources such as embodied play and MR towards more normative accounts.
