Poster #51 - Responding to Challenges in Group Processes Involving Diverse Students: An Expectation States Theory Perspective

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

In the higher-education context, to date, little attention has been paid to the dynamics of interactions within diverse student groups, or the potential factors that prevent diverse groups from “genuine” learning experience. Expectation States Theory presents itself as a valuable theoretical lens to analyze the dynamics involved in group processes and patterns of interactions within diverse groups. Yet this major theoretical perspective has rarely been applied to the higher-education context, one with an inherent value placed on diversity and cooperative learning. This study examines the perspectives of higher-education faculty on understanding and responding to the challenges in group processes involving diverse students, from the lens of Expectation States Theory.
