Disentangling STEAM Education: An Integrative Literature Review

Sat, April 6, 8:00 to 9:30am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

This integrative literature review examined 44 empirical, conceptual, and descriptive articles on the topic of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) Education. An inductive coding method was used to analyze articles and investigate the varied definitions and descriptions of the STEAM acronym, the "Arts" in STEAM, creativity as a learning outcome, and inclusion of Arts Education pedagogies and assessments. Results of this review reveal a variety of definitions for the "Arts" in STEAM, discrepancies between the conceptual and descriptive articles, and an overall lack of measured learning outcomes for the arts and creativity. Recommendations are provided to advance both research and practice in STEAM education.
