The purpose of this autoethnographic narrative inquiry was to describe how I discovered and constructed my leadership style as middle school principal. I worked to improve the performance and reputation of the school through an ethically-driven form of transformative leadership. That required a focus on programs, curriculum, staff, and the physical plant. I came to understand what I valued in the school community, what I valued in others, and what drove me to succeed as I shaped my leadership of a challenging school. I learned that my moral purpose was to approach school leadership with compassion, and to establish a collaborative and synergistic school community for the greater good of students.
