My Journey From Teaching to Teacher Education: Enacting Liberatory Pedagogy in a Constructivist Classroom

Fri, April 5, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Room 801A

Abstract

This paper documents my growth as a teacher educator within the context of teaching an alternative certification course. Ethnographic and autoethnographic methods were used to describe 1) my path to teacher education and 2) my experiences teaching an alternative certification cohort. I describe the development of my teaching philosophy and my struggles to reconcile my early teaching experiences with what purposes I believed education should serve. I also address my positionality as a white woman in the context of developing a critical lens with the alternative certification cohort. My purpose is to explore how my own autobiography informs my philosophy for teaching and teacher education and then how I try to enact this philosophy with one cohort of students.
