Establishing initial fraction concepts is difficult, especially for lower-achieving students. Here, psychological theories promote multimedia approaches—e.g., using tablet PCs. To evaluate the use of tablet PCs in real classroom scenarios, we developed interactive material (iBook) that draws on intuitive abilities, works adaptive, and gives feedback. We split 233 lower-achieving sixth graders into three groups: iPad group (using the iBook on iPads), paper copy group (using a paper copy version of the developed material), and control group (conventional textbooks). Generalized linear mixed models revealed a significant positive effect on the achievement of students who were taught with the iBook immediately after the intervention and eight weeks after the intervention. This suggests that technology can support lower-achieving students in learning fractions.
