Abstract

One important way to help teachers use technology effectively is the provision of professional development (PD). However, our understanding of how benefits from PD programs may be tied to teachers’ personal characteristics is limited. The purpose of this research is to investigate how teachers’ ability and value beliefs influence the relationship between PD exposure and technology integration practices. Using a sample of 683 teachers and hierarchical linear modeling, our study showed that teachers with higher value beliefs were better able to translate PD exposure into technology use for different cognitive tasks. These results suggest that PD programs may be most effective when they target improving teachers’ value beliefs in addition to enhancing technology-related skills.
