American higher education is responsible for preparing citizens who are both engaged in our environment and taking action toward sustaining it. In particular, policymakers have deemed higher education classrooms a promising site for equipping future generations of citizens to engage with sustainability. Although decades of research have informed practice on what good teaching looks like in traditional disciplinary courses, little research has investigated how to teach subject-matter like sustainability, which is politically charged, culturally sensitive, and potentially catastrophic. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the pedagogies instructors use to teach about sustainability across the higher education curriculum.
