Myths of Gifted Education: Are We Just Talking to Ourselves?

Fri, April 5, 4:20 to 6:20pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 206D

Abstract

Abstract
It has been 10 years since the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC, 2019) published their online advocacy page “Myths About Gifted Education.” Since that time, there have been few studies examining the prevalence of these misconceptions in teachers and parents inside and outside the gifted community. Using an on-line survey of 421 parents and teachers, this study sked participants their level of agreement with these myths. Among parents of gifted children and teachers in gifted or advanced classes, few held misconceptions about gifted education. However, among general education teachers, these beliefs were more prevalent. This study underscores the importance of advocacy efforts to extend beyond the gifted education community.
