Abstract

Teacher education programs incorporate coursework focused on how to effectively educate English language learners (ELLs). Preparing future educators to work with this growing subgroup of students is becoming increasing more important as many schools are continuously receiving higher enrollments of ELLs. To better understand future educators’ perceptions of teaching ELLs, this study utilized a case study approach to examine the accommodations that 90 pre-service teachers believe are most important to provide to ELLs. Further, participants provided self-evaluations of their perceptions of their ability to effectively educate this group of learners. Although participants were able to describe ELL accommodations, they typically did not use appropriate terms and expressed concern with their ability to educate effectively novice English learning students.
