Instrument Validation With Two Samples: How Racialized Aggressions on Social Media Affect Students

Mon, April 8, 10:25 to 11:55am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

In our investigation examining students’ of color encounters with racialized aggressions on social media, and the influence of these encounters on their experiences, the research team designed a survey instrument to capture the psycho-social impact of racialized aggression on students of color at predominantly white institutions (PWIs). The research team then tested the instrument with two pilot studies- one multi-campus pilot study and one study of college students recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. The results indicate that the survey is a reliable and valid tool to measure racialized aggressions. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.
