Many students lose track in chemistry because they do not acquire necessary expertise in the early phases of chemistry education. This lack of basic knowledge inhibits new learning in later phases, causing the difference in performance from early stages of learning to persist. To support these students, it is relevant to investigate how essential ideas and concepts are related to each other and how they contribute to the predominantly hierarchical structure of chemical knowledge. Therefore, learning progressions which propose possible learning pathways for the development of professional competencies were developed for the first two learning years in chemistry. This study aims to investigate the assumed structure of the learning progression empirically.
