Affective Literacies of an Art Museum and First-Grade Classroom

Abstract

Research through human and non-human bodies pertaining to affective literacies and art will be presented. Data collected using ethnomethodological tools during free choice learning events in a major art museum and a public education classroom shows capacities of bodies to affect and be affected (Deleuze & Guattari, 1980/1987; Massumi, 2015). These affects include those produced and circulated around art pieces in the art museum and those created by children that transpose art and curriculum while they take on other-than-human animal characteristics. The study points toward ways that affect theory, art, and post-qualitative methods might be useful in disentangling truth claims, conducting education research, and in reading and writing a multi-modal world.
