Poster #6 - Multilevel Exploration of Student Engagement and Achievement

Sat, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Student engagement is an indicator of achievement in schools, and one of the non-academic measures accepted for school accountability reporting under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Aggregate school-level measures of engagement and achievement can inform Local Education Authorities of schools that are struggling and that may need additional support and resources to improve engagement to support student success. A school level test of engagement data with student achievement showed expected patterns of higher student achievement associated with higher levels of engagement at the earlier school levels, and decreased engagement at the high school level. Suggestions for research with engagement and achievement data matched by time and at the student level are proposed.
