Comparison of Technology-Supported and Laboratory-Based Environments: Formative Assessment of Students' Learning in Physics

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Room 802B

Abstract

This research study aimed to compare students’ conceptual knowledge in physics who were taught in two different groups. The main research question was as follows: Are there significant differences between technology supported teaching and laboratory based teaching in terms of students’ learning? The participants of the study were 96 9th grade students studying in an all-boys state high school. The instruction continued in the dynamics unit and lasted 8 weeks. Data were collected via worksheets. Independent t-tests were performed to analyze the data and compare the groups statistically. The students who were taught dynamics by involving with technology understood most of the concepts better than the students who were taught dynamics with the help of laboratory activities.
