Using the Perceptions of Wyoming Principals to Predict Superintendent Motivating Language Use

Abstract

Wyoming is a state of excellence in education in the Western United States. In this study, the authors examine if the antecedents of Motivating Language [Behavioral Integrity, Competence, Goodwill, and Trustworthiness] were predictors of superintendent talk in the form of Motivating Language. Principals from 47 districts in Wyoming received a survey invitation via email and 113 responded to the survey. Each predictor variable was statistically correlated with dependent variables. The multiple regression revealed a statistically significant model. The results are provided along with a discussion based on the extant literature. The findings are significant for practitioners/scholars because they redefine superintendent credibility, clarify trustworthiness and trust, and define walk and talk alignment for the first time in the superintendent literature.
