Youth Activism and Grassroots Education: Transborder Pedagogies of Resistance Between Korean and U.S. Youth Activists

Abstract

This paper explores how youth activists in South Korea and the U.S disrupt established systems of knowledge and create transformative possibilities by organizing grassroots spaces of learning. The paper identifies ‘trans-border pedagogies of resistance’ that illustrate connections between grassroots educational practices of Korean and U.S youth activists. Based on participant observation data and interviews with 9 Korean and 6 U.S youth activists, this study broadens existing understandings of where knowledge and education are situated by demonstrating alternative grassroots education that youth activists created beyond formal educational structures. Through its examination of trans-border pedagogies, this paper contributes to finding intersections and building trans-border bridges and solidarity in a world limited by boundaries of exclusion.
