In this study we focused on the question of what affects the perceived job-related relevance of a physics problem for a pre-service physics teacher.
We analyzed problem-properties using 7 interviews. In order to investigate which student variables might be advantageous in perceiving a learning material as relevant, we collected quantitative data (37 per-service teachers, 29 physics majors) on student variables in an entrance test and their relevance ratings concerning all physics problems of the physics tutorial groups in the first semester. We show that on the person side it matters that students have the tendency to connect physics to the real world. On the item side we found 6 properties to be connected to the construct of relevance.
